Madhya Pradesh has become the first state to reconstitute its Waqf Board under the amended Waqf Act, with the new 10-member body including two Hindu members. The state government notified the reconstituted Board through a gazette notification issued on Sunday.

The exercise follows a decision by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to implement the amended Waqf Act. The Board has been constituted under Section 13(1) of the Waqf Act, 1995, as amended in 2025, in line with the provisions of Section 14.

Sanwar Patel appointed chairman of new MP Waqf Board

Sanwar Patel has been appointed Chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board.

The two Hindu members inducted into the Board are Manoj Malpani from Indore and Animesh Bhargava from Raghogarh in Guna district.

Other members include Najma Heptulla of New Delhi, Bhopal North MLA Atif Aqueel, Faizan Khan from Ujjain, Sister Fatema Choudhary from Indore, Shaista Sultan, a councillor from Berasia in Bhopal, and Ratlam councillor Shabana Khan.

The Commissioner of Backward Classes and Minority Welfare has also been appointed as a member of the Board.

Najma Heptulla to continue till 2028

According to the government notification, Najma Heptulla will continue as a member for the remainder of her existing term.

She had been appointed under the elected category in April 2023, and her tenure remains valid until April 18, 2028. The latest notification retains her in the reconstituted Board for the balance of that term.

The state government said the reconstitution of the Board under the amended law is intended to facilitate early implementation of the revised provisions of the Waqf Act.
