Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, on Saturday conducted an on-site inspection of the Eastern Portal of the Zoji-La Tunnel during his visit to Drass. Accompanied by project engineers, the Lt Governor entered the tunnel to assess the progress of the ongoing construction work.
During the visit, the project team briefed the Lt Governor on the current status of the tunnel. They informed him that only 1.7 kilometers of excavation remains and that the project is on track for completion by 2028.

Lt Governor Gupta took the opportunity to interact with the workers, commending their dedication, resilience, and hard work under challenging conditions. He acknowledged their vital contribution to what he described as a transformative infrastructure initiative for the region.

Later, while speaking with site engineers, the Lt Governor praised their technical expertise and commitment, urging them to maintain their momentum and continue working with the same zeal.
Describing the Zoji-La Tunnel as a “dream project” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Lt Governor emphasized its significance in enhancing regional connectivity.
He noted that the tunnel, once completed, will serve as a crucial all-weather link between Ladakh and the rest of the country, greatly boosting tourism and facilitating the economic and socio-cultural integration of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
“The completion of the Zoji-La Tunnel will mark a new chapter of development for this region,” he said, “bringing strategic, economic, and social benefits while unlocking the vast tourism potential of Ladakh.”
