All India Congress Committee General Secretary, former Union Minister, and Sirsa MP Kumari Selja has expressed deep anguish over what she described as the continued denial of justice to the family of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Puran Kumar, who died by suicide earlier this month. She said the incident was not the result of a single day but the culmination of years of sustained harassment that ultimately drove a highly respected officer to take his own life.

Addressing media persons in Chandigarh, Kumari Selja said it was “deeply disturbing” that an officer known for his honesty and integrity was pushed to such an extent that he saw no escape other than ending his life. “This is not merely an individual’s tragedy. It exposes the insensitivity and decay within the system. The pain and anguish of his family are beyond words,” she said.
The Congress leader pointed out that Puran Kumar’s wife, Amneet P. Kumar, herself a senior IAS officer, and their children continue to live in deep grief and despair. “The officers named in his suicide note are the same individuals against whom he had earlier raised serious concerns. Despite repeated complaints, neither the government nor the system took his pain seriously. Instead, he was subjected to harassment and punitive actions,” she alleged.

Kumari Selja added that it was “shameful” that the family of a freedom fighter, an IAS officer, and an IPS officer had to struggle just to be heard. “Even after an FIR was lodged by the family, the government has failed to arrest the accused. This raises a grave question—does the voice of a senior bureaucrat or an ordinary citizen carry no value in this country? Will officers be punished merely for seeking justice?” she asked.

She further alleged that meaningful action in the case only began after the family refused to perform the last rites of the deceased officer. “The BJP government must explain why such a situation arose in the first place—why were repeated warnings ignored, and why was no one willing to listen to his grievances? The government stands in the dock today and owes an explanation to the people of the nation,” she said.

Calling for accountability, Kumari Selja urged both the Haryana government and the Centre to ensure a fair, impartial, and transparent investigation so that justice is delivered to the bereaved family.

She also emphasized that the case has deeply disturbed the Dalit community across the country, which is now demanding answers and fair treatment.

“The entire episode is a reminder that silence in the face of injustice only strengthens the oppressor. The government must act decisively, not merely issue statements,” she asserted.
