The Kerala Police is investigating into the allegation that an office bearer of the Kerala High Court Lawyers Association took money from a client on the pretext of paying to a High Court judge for getting anticipatory bail

It is alleged that the lawyer, who is an office bearer of the High Court Lawyers Association, took a bribe of lakhs of rupees from a client, who works in the film industry and who was accused in a rape case, on the pretext of giving to a judge, for getting anticipatory bail.

The Kochi City Police had registered a rape case against the film personality a few months ago. It is alleged that the lawyer took the money on the pretext of paying to the judge, who heard the case to get anticipatory bail. The judge who heard the case had received some information in this regard.

Earlier, the High Court had conducted a vigilance investigation on the basis of the judge’s complaint in the incident. Following this, the full court recommended a police investigation considering the taint the incident has cast on the judiciary. On the basis of this recommendation, the High Court Registrar has written to the state police chief to investigate the case.

Based on the High Court Registrar’s letter, the State Police Chief instructed the Kochi City Police to probe the case. The investigation will be conducted under the supervision of Kochi City Commissioner.

A case will be filed if the preliminary investigation finds that there is substance in the allegation. This is the first time in the state that the police are investigating a lawyer for allegedly taking money at the request of the High Court.
