The Kerala High Court on Tuesday banned the inclusion of political representatives in temple administrative committees under the Malbar Devaswom Board. The court ruled that those involved in active politics should not be appointed as non-hereditary trustees of temples.

A division bench comprising Justice Anil K Narendran and Justice Ajith Kumar said that political activists should not be appointed in the temple management committees under the Malabar Devaswom Board.

The order came on a plea filed by the temple devotees Ananthanarayanan and PN Sreeraman against the inclusion of local leaders of the CPI-M and the DYFI in the Kalikavu temple management committee under the Malabar Devaswom Board.

The court held the election of CPI-M and DYFI local leaders Ashok Kumar, Ratheesh and Pankajakshan as members of the Palakkad Kalikavu temple management committee invalid. The court also rejected the argument that DYFI is not a political outfit.

Legal experts say though the order is related to the Kalikavu temple management committee elections, it may apply to other temples in the future.
