Kerala Court detains Congress MP Shafi Parambil, fines him ₹1,000 in NH blockade case

The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Palakkad, Kerala, on Tuesday sentenced Vatakara MP Shafi Parambil to imprisonment till the rising of the court and imposed a fine of ₹1,000 in connection with a protest involving the blocking of a National Highway in Palakkad in 2022.

Shafi Parambil, the prime accused in the case, had earlier failed to appear before the court, leading to the issuance of a non-bailable arrest warrant against him last week. He appeared before the court on Tuesday following the issuance of the warrant.

In related proceedings, P Sarin, a former Youth Congress worker who has since joined the Left, was sentenced to a fine of ₹500 and imprisonment till the rising of the court after appearing before the court earlier.
