The Jharkhand Legislative Assembly on Monday plunged into mourning following the demise of former chief minister and Rajya Sabha MP Shibu Soren.

As the second day of the Monsoon Session commenced, the House echoed with slogans of “Shibu Soren Amar Rahein”, before being adjourned indefinitely in a rare and emotional session.

“Monday is not just a legislative day, but a day of profound loss. Dishom Guru Shibu Soren was not merely a politician — he was the soul of Jharkhand’s struggle, a beacon for the marginalized,” he said. “Baba is no more.”

In a symbolic gesture, the Assembly will receive Shibu Soren’s mortal remains on Tuesday at 10 am, where a ceremonial tribute will be held. The Assembly Secretariat has formally announced the condolence meeting, which is expected to draw legislators across party lines in homage to one of Jharkhand’s tallest figures.

The Monsoon Session, which began on August 1 and was scheduled to run until August 7, now stands suspended. The Assembly’s adjournment underscores the magnitude of the moment — marking the end of an era in Jharkhand politics.

The atmosphere in the House remained somber, with members expressing their grief not through debates, but through silence, slogans, and reflection on a legacy rooted in decades of struggle, rights movements, and governance.
