The inauguration of the Jewar International Airport marks not just a major infrastructure milestone but also a key political moment for the BJP, reinforcing its governance narrative ahead of the 2027 Jewar International Airport elections. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, seeking a third consecutive term, is expected to anchor part of his campaign around the project’s delivery and its economic potential.

Launching the airport, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the government’s focus on executing long-pending projects while targeting rivals such as the Samajwadi Party and the Congress for delays.

He noted that the project had originally received approval during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 2003 but remained stalled for years. “Generations have passed, but the airport was not built,” he remarked, adding that between 2004 and 2014, under the United Progressive Alliance, the project remained largely confined to files.

Positioned as a catalyst for Uttar Pradesh’s economy and a major boost to connectivity across the National Capital Region, the airport has long featured in the BJP’s electoral messaging, including during the 2017 and 2022 Assembly polls. The party has consistently highlighted its potential for job creation and regional development, even as opposition parties raised concerns over land acquisition.

Local sentiment now suggests early signs of economic momentum. Residents and stakeholders view the project as a game-changer for employment in western Uttar Pradesh, with anticipated spillover benefits in logistics, warehousing, industry, and tourism, particularly for nearby hubs such as Mathura and Agra.

Spread across 7,200 acres, the airport—planned with six runways—is also expected to ease congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Developed by Zurich Airport International AG, it is poised to reshape the region’s real estate and infrastructure landscape.

The project, however, faced significant regulatory and commercial hurdles for years. Located within 100 km of IGI Airport, it fell within aviation norms that discouraged new airports within a 150-km radius without special clearance.

During the UPA era, these constraints—along with objections from IGI Airport’s operator, GMR Group—contributed to prolonged delays, even as proposals, including a 2010 revival push, were considered.

A policy shift came after the BJP assumed power at the Centre, with the Civil Aviation Ministry revisiting the 150-km guideline and allowing exceptions for greenfield airports based on projected demand. This led to site clearance in 2018 and accelerated progress thereafter.

Since 2017, with the BJP in power both at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh, the project has gathered pace. Authorities fast-tracked land acquisition, secured defence and environmental clearances, and signed a concession agreement in 2020 with Zurich Airport International AG. Concerns raised by IGI Airport’s operator were addressed through negotiations, while the government emphasised the need for long-term capacity expansion and robust regional infrastructure in the NCR.

Now operational, Jewar Airport stands as both an economic lever and a political symbol—central to the BJP’s pitch of performance, policy reform and infrastructure-led growth.
