Congress leader Jairam Ramesh urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to prioritise the return of fugitives like Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Lalit Modi during his ongoing visit to the UK.

Taking to platform X, Ramesh said: “The India-UK FTA (Free Trade Agreement) will be signed today in London in the presence of Prime Minister Modi. What India needs from the UK is the announcement of another and more effective FTA (Fugitive Transfer Agreement).”

“After all, the three big stars of Modi’s model of ‘fugitive-nomics,’ Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Lalit Modi, are still awaiting their return home. And it’s also possible that a few more names might soon be added to this list,” Ramesh said.

While in London, PM Modi is expected to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and discuss various issues, including the FTA and cooperation in areas like defence and technology. The visit is seen as a significant step in strengthening India-UK relations.

The India-UK FTA (Free Trade Agreement) aims to eliminate tariffs on 99 per cent of Indian exports and reduce tariffs on 90 per cent of British goods, potentially doubling bilateral trade to USD 120 billion by 2030. The agreement is expected to boost economic ties, enhance market access, and facilitate cooperation in technology, healthcare, and education.

Demand for a ‘Fugitive Transfer Agreement’ highlights the complexities and challenges that come with international trade agreements. It’s likely that PM Modi will raise the issue of fugitive return during his meetings with UK officials.
