BJP National Spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Friday slammed the M K Stalin government for adopting a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly opposing the Union government’s Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB G Ram G) scheme. He also questioned the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, asking whether the Constitution was not in danger when an Act of Parliament was being openly defied by State Assemblies.
Speaking to the media, Trivedi asked whether any State Assembly had the constitutional authority to pass a resolution against a Bill that had been duly passed by the Parliament of India and had neither been objected to nor stayed by the Supreme Court. “I also want to ask the governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala: if your State Assembly passes a resolution, does any Zila Panchayat or Municipal Corporation have the authority to pass a law saying it will not follow the legislation of Kerala or Tamil Nadu? If the answer is no, then the same principle applies to you as well,” he said.

To Gandhi, he said: “Is the Constitution in danger or not when an Act of Parliament is being openly defied by State Assemblies in a manner that is in stark and brazen conflict with the Constitution and its spirit? Our forefathers, from Dr Rajendra Prasad to Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, clearly stated that any Act passed by Parliament is binding on all citizens of India. Does this not also show that, for them, the Constitution is something they merely keep in their pocket and use for convenience?”
On Friday, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the BJP-led NDA’s VB G Ram G scheme. Chief Minister Stalin moved the resolution urging the Union government to safeguard the right to work for rural people under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (2005), ensure timely and adequate release of funds, allow states to frame work guidelines, and allocate funds based on states’ performance and efficiency.
