Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will look for a much sharper batting performance when they take on three-time title-holders Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a crucial IPL clash at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday, with both teams entering the match carrying very different momentum in the tournament.
RCB currently sit at the top of the points table with 14 points, although that position could change depending on the result of the clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans, who are also on 14 points. But more than their position on the table, RCB will be concerned about the recent dip in the intensity and fluency of their batting unit.

The Bengaluru side built their campaign around aggressive and fearless batting performances earlier in the season, but that trademark approach was missing in their previous outing against Mumbai Indians while chasing a modest 167. RCB struggled for momentum throughout the innings and eventually relied on a fighting half-century from Krunal Pandya and a crucial six from Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the final over to scrape through.
A major concern for RCB has been the form of captain Rajat Patidar. After an explosive start to the season, during which he dominated bowling attacks with his aggressive strokeplay, Patidar’s returns have dipped considerably in recent matches. In his last six innings, he has managed only one fifty-plus score and just one other innings above 20, affecting the firepower of RCB’s middle order.
Despite that, contributions from players like Devdutt Padikkal and Tim David have helped RCB stay afloat and remain among the top teams in the competition.
However, they now face a much tougher challenge against a Kolkata bowling attack that has found rhythm at the right time. KKR’s spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy has been central to their revival, while domestic bowlers like Kartik Tyagi, Vaibhav Arora and Anukul Roy have provided excellent support.
That bowling unit has played a major role in KKR’s four consecutive wins after a poor start to the season. If the Raipur pitch continues to remain slightly tacky like it was in the previous game, RCB’s batters could face another stern examination.
For KKR, the equation is much more straightforward. The three-time champions are still eighth on the table with nine points from 10 matches, and another defeat could leave them dangerously close to elimination from the playoff race.
To keep their hopes alive, KKR’s batting group will need to handle RCB’s new-ball pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood effectively. Captain Ajinkya Rahane has not been able to find consistency this season, but vice-captain Rinku Singh, New Zealand batter Finn Allen, Anukul Roy and Angkrish Raghuvanshi have stepped up with important contributions in recent matches.
Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has also looked far more assured after struggling earlier in the season, giving greater balance and stability to the KKR batting line-up.
KKR will hope that improved form continues in Raipur as they aim to extend their winning streak and keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
