“The loss of lives and property due to heavy rains in Nepal is heartbreaking. We stand with the Nepali people and the Government of Nepal during this difficult time,” PM Modi said in a post on X. “As a friendly neighbour and first responder, India is committed to providing any kind of assistance that may be needed,” he added.
The heavy rainfall has caused widespread destruction in Nepal, with several highways blocked by landslides and washed away by floods, stranding hundreds of passengers. The Koshi River, which causes deadly floods in the eastern Indian state of Bihar almost every year, has overflowed, prompting authorities to open all 56 sluice gates of the Koshi Barrage.
Rescue operations are underway, with the Nepal Army deploying troops and a helicopter to assist in the efforts. However, the bad weather has hampered the rescue operations. According to officials, nearly 1,500 meters of river embankments have eroded, causing an estimated preliminary loss of around Rs 100 million. Several hydropower plants have also been affected, with power generation halted due to infrastructure damage.
As the situation continues to unfold, the Nepal government has urged citizens to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The international community has also offered support and aid to help Nepal navigate this natural disaster.
