Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai voiced deep concern over disturbing reports of sexual abuse and land grab cases allegedly perpetrated by TMC supporters in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal.

In a letter addressed to Mamata Banerjee, his West Bengal counterpart, Sai demanded immediate intervention and stringent action against the culprits involved.

Describing the findings of the National Tribal Commission as “gruesome” and “horrifying,” Sai highlighted the egregious injustices heaped on women and tribal communities in Sandeshkhali.

He condemned the brutal rape of more than 50 women, the illegal seizure of tribal lands, and the withholding of MNREGA wages as acts that have tarnished the very essence of humanity.

Sai emphasised the intolerant nature of endangering the lives and honour of tribal populations for political gains, urging Banerjee to rise above partisan considerations and prioritize the interests of humanity. Reminding her of Bengal’s illustrious history as a bastion of social reforms and cultural richness, he urged her to uphold these noble values by swiftly addressing the atrocities in Sandeshkhali.

“As the chief minister of West Bengal, it is imperative that you demonstrate strong leadership by ensuring immediate action and strict punishment for the perpetrators,” Sai wrote, calling for decisive measures to deliver justice to the victims and restore their dignity.

In his plea, the chief minister implored Banerjee to transcend political divides and take resolute action against the perpetrators, including their political allies. He underscores the moral obligation to protect the marginalised and uphold the principles of justice and equality.

“I appeal to you to rise above political considerations and prioritize the interests of humanity in addressing this grave issue. It is imperative that criminals like Shahjahan and Sirajuddin, along with their political protectors, face legal consequences for their reprehensible actions,” Sai concludes, urging Banerjee to act swiftly and decisively in the pursuit of justice.
