In grip of cold wave, J&K, Ladakh reeling under outages

Jammu and Kashmir was on Wednesday in the grip of a severe cold wave with higher reaches across the Union territories (UTs) of J&K and Ladakh experiencing heavy snowfall at the higher reaches and rain in the plains of Jammu.

Jammu and Kashmir was on Wednesday in the grip of a severe cold wave with higher reaches across the Union territories (UTs) of J&K and Ladakh experiencing heavy snowfall at the higher reaches and rain in the plains of Jammu.

Frequent power breakdowns and consequent outages were adding to the woes of the people as heating devices did not operate. The prospect of more snow and rain in the next few hours is infusing anxieties among the residents.

Metrology Department chief Sonam Lotus predicted an increase in the intensity and distribution of snow and rain in J&K and snowfall in Ladakh is very likely from this evening with peak activity during night and tomorrow forenoon and decrease thereafter.

Certain places in Ladakh recorded -24 degrees Celsius.

Tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Sonamarg in Kashmir received heavy snowfall.

The Meteorological Centre, Srinagar said it was currently snowing at Sonamarg, Gulmarg and other higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley while light rain in plains of north and central Kashmir coupled with cloudy and fog in plains of Jammu.

Srinagar had a low of -3.5 degrees Celsius against -1.8 degrees Celsius recorded the previous night. Srinagar also received 0.3mm rainfall during the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Wednesday.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 3 degrees Celsius against the minus 4.4 degree Celsius the previous night. Gulmarg also received 6.6 cm snow and 6.0mm rainfall during the 24 hours till 8.30 am.

The tourist spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius against minus 3.2 degrees Celsius a day ago. It also received 1.1mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours till 8.30 am.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of -1.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday against minus 0.8 degrees Celsius while Kokernag recorded a low of 0.7 degrees Celsius against minus 3.6 degrees Celsius the previous night.
