Every festival has a story. Holika Dahan’s tale is legendary. Holika was the sister of tyrant king Hiranyakashyap. She had a strange boon that fire couldn’t harm her.
Hiranyakashyap’s son Prahlad was devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. This had made the king furious. To punish his son, Hiranyakashyap tricked Holika into sitting on the fire with Prahlad. But here is the twist. Divine grace intervened. Prahlad emerged safe and unharmed, while Holika was burnt to ashes.
This tale is why, during Holika Dahan, a stick buried in the soil symbolising Prahlad is rescued from the fire, while all the surrounding wood burns.
