Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark on former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation and his whereabouts has only added to the mystery surrounding his sudden decision to step down from his post.
“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly and unexpectedly resigned as Vice President of India on the night of July 21st, 2025. This was unprecedented. A day later, the PM merely wished him good health.Today the Home Minister has tried to say more. But he has only added to the mystery,” Ramesh wrote on X.

His remarks came shortly after Shah sought to clear the air on Dhankhar’s resignation, saying he cited health reasons for his decision to step down and that the Opposition should not make a fuss out of it.
In an interview with news agency ANI, Shah said, “Dhankhar Sahab’s resignation letter is clear in itself. He has cited health reasons for his resignation. He has also expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Prime Minister and other ministers and government members for his good tenure.”
The home minister also responded to the claims by certain Opposition leaders that Dhankhar has been placed under house arrest, saying “the interpretation of truth and lies should not be based on what the Opposition says.”
“It seems like your interpretation of truth and lies is based on what the Opposition has to say. We shouldn’t make a fuss out of all this. Dhankhar held a constitutional post and discharged his duties as per the Constitution. He resigned due to personal health reasons. One should not deliberate much on the issue,” the Home Minister added.
However, the Congress leader was not convinced with Shah’s response and said there is simply no explanation why an irrepressible and ebullient Dhankhar has been completely incommunicado ever since his resignation.
“There is simply no explanation why the irrepressible and ebullient Shri Dhankhar – who championed the cause of farmers – has been completely incommunicado for well over a month,” Ramesh said, adding “This entire resignation episode is actually bizarre and reflects how G2 function.”
Dhankhar had resigned from the post of Vice President of India on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament on July 21. In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
However, his sudden and unexpected decision to resign and the subsequent absence since then has led to intense political speculation.
Several media houses reported that Dhankhar was forced to resign as the government was miffed with his decision to accept an opposition motion to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma. Some reports also claimed that the government was even preparing to bring an impeachment motion against Dhankhar.
