Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant won the appreciation of people on social media for censuring a man for polluting the Cumbharjua river on Tuesday.

Sawant, who succeeded Manohar Parrikar as the Chief Minister following his death, posted a video showing him telling a scooterist not to throw flowers offered to God in the river.

“Earlier today, while travelling over Gaundalim bridge, came across a citizen who was disposing nirmalya in the river. I requested him to desist from doing so,” he wrote in a tweet containing the video of the incident.

“As responsible citizens we need to begin disposing wastes properly and also educate & guide our fellow citizens to do so,” he added.

“At least don’t do it again,” Sawant is heard telling the man in the brief video.

In a separate tweet, the Goa CM drew attention to the Centre’s Swachh Bharat mission.

“Let us work together for a #SwachhBharat,” he said.

Cumbharjua is a well-known habitat of the Indian mugger crocodile. It is connected to the main Mandovi River that flows through Goa.

Twitterati showered praise on the CM.

Sawant, the former Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, was sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of Goa on 19 March following the death of Manohar Parrikar.

On 20 March, Sawant won the floor test after 20 MLAs voted in his favour in the state assembly. The ‘magic number’ for a simple majority in the 36-member House is 19.

Of those who voted in favour of the motion, 11 were from BJP, 3 each from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and Goa Forward Party and 3 Independents.

Fifteen MLAs – 14 Congress MLAs and the lone NCP legislator – voted against the motion in the Goa assembly.
