A joyful evening during Kartik Mela turned into a nightmare when a giant swing at a local fair suddenly collapsed, killing a six-year-old girl and injuring five others, police said on Thursday.
The horrific accident took place during the Kartik Purnima celebrations at the Ramghat fair on Wednesday evening. According to police reports, around 6 pm, the swing’s axle suddenly broke, causing the entire structure to lose balance and come crashing down.

Himanshi, who was standing nearby, was trapped under the falling swing and suffered severe injuries. Five others riding the swing were also injured. Eyewitnesses said the incident happened so suddenly that people had no time to react, and chaos erupted in the fairground within seconds.

Local police and bystanders rushed to rescue the victims and took them to a nearby hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts, the girl succumbed to her injuries during treatment. The five injured were treated and later discharged after their condition improved.
Following the tragedy, police detained four individuals responsible for operating the swing on charges of negligence.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Tejveer Singh confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections, and an investigation is underway to determine whether proper maintenance and safety checks were carried out before the swing was opened to the public.
