Sleuths of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested Sudip Mahato, the elder son of former Purulia zilla parishad sabhadipati Sristidhar Mahato, Friday evening from a house in Purulia town area in connection with the murder of BJP supporter Trilochan Mahato. Trilochan was allegedly killed and his body hanged from a tree at Balarampur on 30 May, following the three-tier gram panchayat polls.

CID arrested another Trinamool Congress supporter, Uttam Pal, from Supurdih village on Friday. Arrested under Sections 360, 302, 120 B and 201 of the Indian Penal Code, he has been sent to 10 days’ CID custody by a local court.

The CID took over the investigations from Balarampur police on 3 June and first arrested one Punjabi Mahato from Supurdih village in this connection. In the wake of the murder, the then police superintendent of Purulia, Joy Biswas, had been transferred and replaced by Akash Magharia.

General secretary of Balrampur mondal of BJP, Gopal Kataruka, said they had been claiming since the very beginning that Trinamul supporters and goons had killed their supporters and these two fresh arrests proved their claim.

Trinamool Congress district president and Paschimanchal Unnayan Parishad Minister Shantiram Mahato said he was not aware of the development and refused to comment on this issue.
