The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday joined the global community in commemorating Human Rights Day, marking the 77th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. In a solemn reference during the Upper House session, Chairman C P Radhakrishnan emphasised the enduring significance of this historic document as the foundation of human dignity, freedom, equality, and justice worldwide.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman highlighted this year’s global theme, “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials”, designed to reinforce that human rights are not abstract ideals but essential and attainable necessities that empower individuals, protect dignity, prevent harm, and transform societies for the better.

India’s longstanding commitment to these universal values, rooted in its Constitution and inspired by the ancient Sanskrit ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — “the world is one family” — was underscored as a guiding principle in the nation’s human rights journey.

“As elected representatives of the people, it is our bounden duty to ensure that human rights remain living, breathing realities for every citizen, particularly the most vulnerable and marginalised sections of our society,” Radhakrishnan said, calling on lawmakers to uphold these principles with renewed dedication.

He further affirmed, “This historic and enduring document continues to stand as the bedrock of human dignity, freedom, equality, and justice for every individual across the world.”

The Chairman further urged the House to pledge anew: “On this solemn occasion of Human Rights Day 2025, let us pledge anew to work tirelessly towards a nation and a world where human rights are truly our everyday essentials—positive in their impact, essential for dignified existence, and attainable for all without exception.”

The Chairman’s words serve as a timely reminder of the crucial role of India’s legislators in protecting and promoting human rights, ensuring that these fundamental freedoms are realised for all citizens now and in the future.
