Veteran Congress leader and former union minister Kanhu Charan Lenka passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after prolonged age-related ailments on Friday.

Lenka (86), who served as Minister of State for Railways and Agriculture in the early nineties in the union government headed by P V Narasimha Rao, is widely regarded as a grassroots leader who contributed towards the growth of Congress in the eighties and nineties.

His political career spanned nearly four decades. He served a term in the Rajya Sabha from 1988 to 1994 and represented the Choudwar constituency in the Odisha Assembly from 1995 to 2000.
