Former Kerala Minister for Public Works and senior Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader V K Ebrahim Kunju passed away in Kochi on Tuesday. He was 73.

He had been undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, heart failure and chronic kidney disease for some time. He breathed his last at around 3.40 pm at Lakeshore Hospital, Kochi, where he had been admitted on January 4 following health-related complications.

Born on May 20, 1952, at Kongorpilly near Aluva to V U Khader and Chithumma, Ebrahim Kunju entered public life through the Muslim Students Federation and later the Muslim Youth League, marking the beginning of a long and influential political journey.

He was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 2001 and went on to win again in 2006, 2011 and 2016, representing the Mattancherry and later the Kalamassery constituencies.

Ebrahim Kunju first became a minister after P K Kunhalikutty, then Minister for Industries in the UDF Cabinet (2001–2006), resigned. He later served as Minister for Industries in the Oommen Chandy Cabinet from 2011 to 2016.

In 2020, the Kerala Governor granted permission to prosecute him in connection with the Palarivattom flyover case, following which the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested him in the case.

Ebrahim Kunju is survived by his wife, Nadeera, and their three children — Abdul Gafoor, Abbas and Anoob.
