Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary and litterateur Dr Shambhu Nath collapsed while delivering a speech and later died while attending a programme here. He was 80.

Dr Shambhu Nath was the chief guest at the release ceremony of writer Manorama Srivastava’s novel, based on Karna at Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan on Saturday evening.

The surprising thing is that he was speaking about death, saying, “The day and time of death is fixed; no one can change it.” Suddenly, his head started bending over the table, and he became unconscious. Dr Shambhu Nath’s wife, Chanda, was also present in the auditorium. Dr Shambhunath was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where he was declared dead.

At the time of the incident, the stage was being conducted by poet Sarvesh Asthana.  Writer Manorama Shrivastava, Assistant Director of Doordarshan Atmaprakash Mishra; senior poet Buddhinath Mishra; former Executive Chairman of Hindi Sansthan, Uday Pratap Singh; Chief Editor of Hindi Sansthan, Amita Dubey; and senior theatre artist Suryamohan Kulshreshtha, along with other eminent litterateurs, were present on the stage. 

Dr Shambhunath was a 1970 batch IAS officer. He became the Chief Secretary of the state in 2007. He was also the Executive Chairman of Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan. He breathed his last in the same Hindi Sansthan. His administrative career was brilliant. He was also the Principal Secretary during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s tenure as Chief Minister.
