Established in the late 1950s with assistance from the UK, the Durgapur Steel Plant serves as a key unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and stands as a testament to India’s industrial advancement. It is located in Durgapur, West Bengal, and known for its integrated steel production facilities, technological innovations as well as significant contributions to the nation’s infrastructure development.
Initially, the plant commenced operations in 1959 and was among the first integrated steel plants set up in India. Over the decades, it evolved into a leading producer of long steel products. Till now, it serves as the only producer of forged railway wheels and axles in the country.
