After the inauguration of state-of-the-art BrahMos facility in Lucknow by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on May 11 last, the DRDO moved a proposal of Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE) to set up an Infrared Detector Technology Center in the Lucknow node of Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC).

The UP Cabinet, on July 22, approved the allocation of 25 acre land in the Lucknow node of UPDIC to IRDE to set up this new centre at a token lease of Rs 1 per year, officials here on Friday confirmed.

This Center will be a high-technology fab-line for fabrication and manufacturing of infra-red detectors, which will lead to indigenous manufacturing of night vision systems required for the Armed Forces.

This project will fulfill the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ‘Atmanibharta’ in the defence sector, the official said.

Once the proposal is approved, the total investment to set up this technology center will be more than Rs 2,000 crore, and it will help in achieving Aatmanirbharta in fabrication of infrared detector technology bringing India among select countries possessing such a capability.

The proposed project will generate a large number of direct and indirect employment opportunities. Various industries and academic institutions will be involved in the project, claimed former Bureaucrat and representative of Rajnath Singh Diwakar Tripathi here.
