Three armed robbers were arrested at Connaught Place after an encounter took place between them and Delhi Police near Shankar Market this morning, officials said.

The criminals used to target joggers, cyclists, and people during their morning walks.

The suspects were identified as 22-year-old Mohammad Salim, 24-year-old Mohammad Ismail and 22-year-old Sayud, the officials told news agency PTI. One of their group member managed to escape, they added.

The police laid a trap after they received information that the suspects would again try to target people near Shankar Market.

The criminals were riding motorcycle, were asked to stop by a police team. Instead of stopping, the two men started firing at the police. In self defence, the police also fired back at them, a senior police officer said.

Accoring to the officer, during the firing encounter, Salim and Ismail suffered bullet injuries in their legs and were taken to RML hospital for treatment, the officer added.

While Sayud was arrested, another suspect managed to flee from the spot, the officer said.

It is suspected that the accused were involved in allegedly robbing an expensive bicycle and an iPhone from a 24-year-old man at Connaught Place last week.

A case has been registered under Sections 186/353/307/34 of IPC and 25/27 of Arms Act and raids are being carried out by several teams to catch the accomplice on the run, police said.
