A dreaded criminal carrying a reward of ₹1 lakh was killed in a police encounter early Saturday morning in Bhavisa village in the Shamli district.

Acting on a tip-off, the police launched an operation and cordoned off the area. When asked to surrender, the criminal – Mohammad Nafees – opened fire on the police, prompting retaliatory action in which he was shot.

Nafees, who hailed from Khail locality in Kandhla village, was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

According to the police, he had been on the run for the past three years and was involved in over 34 criminal cases, including murder, robbery, and dacoity.

Senior police officials, including SP NP Singh, were present at the encounter site.

Singh stated that a list of all wanted criminals in the district has been compiled, and a special operation is underway to track them down.

From the scene, police recovered a 32-bore pistol, a .315 bore country-made firearm (tamanchaa), seven cartridges (two used and five live rounds), and a motorcycle. All seized weapons have been sent for forensic examination.

Another suspect reportedly fled the scene during the encounter, and a search operation is ongoing to apprehend him. The body of Nafees has been sent for postmortem.
