On Constitution Day (November 26, 2025), Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to the people of India with a letter that looks back at the moment the country adopted its Constitution in 1949 and reflects on what that document still means today. He reminded citizens that the government had formally marked 26 November as Constitution Day in 2015 to give the occasion the dignity it deserved.
In the letter, the Prime Minister dwelt on how the Constitution has opened doors for people from modest backgrounds to serve the nation in positions of responsibility.

He pointed to moments from his own public life to show what Parliament and the Constitution mean to him, such as bowing at the entrance of the House in 2014 and, years later in 2019, lifting the Constitution to his forehead as a mark of reverence.

The PM said the Constitution has opened the way for countless Indians to imagine stronger possibilities and to believe they can achieve them. He also paid homage to the members of the Constituent Assembly, including Dr Rajendra Prasad, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and the women members whose ideas helped shape the document. He mentioned earlier commemorations such as the Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra in Gujarat on the Constitution’s 60th anniversary and the special parliamentary session and nationwide programmes held during its 75th year, both of which drew strong public participation.
Modi pointed out that this year’s Constitution Day comes at a time marked by important anniversaries, such as the 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the 150 years of Vande Mataram, and the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. He said these milestones remind the country of the duties laid out in Article 51A. Invoking Mahatma Gandhi, he wrote that rights naturally follow when duties are performed sincerely and that this principle forms the foundation of both social and economic progress.
Looking to the years ahead, the Prime Minister noted that India has already spent 25 years in the 21st century and that the coming decades will be significant. By 2047, the country will mark 100 years of independence, and two years later, a century since the Constitution was adopted. Modi underlined that decisions taken now will shape the lives of future generations and urged citizens to keep their duties foremost as India works towards the idea of a Viksit Bharat.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening democracy by voting and suggested that schools and colleges use Constitution Day to recognise young people turning 18. Encouraging first-time voters, he wrote, would help nurture responsibility and pride among the country’s youth — qualities that reinforce democratic values.
Concluding his letter, Modi called on citizens to renew their commitment to fulfilling their duties as Indians and contribute meaningfully to building a “developed and empowered India”.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister posted on X, saying: “On Constitution Day, we pay tribute to the framers of our Constitution. Their vision and foresight continue to motivate us in our pursuit of building a Viksit Bharat. Our Constitution gives utmost importance to human dignity, equality and liberty. While it empowers us with rights, it also reminds us of our duties as citizens, which we should always try to fulfil. These duties are the foundation of a strong democracy. Let us reiterate our commitment to strengthening Constitutional values through our actions.”
