The Opposition Congress on Monday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, saying the PM took “strict measures” against China — the country that supported Pakistan during Operation Sindoor — by exchanging a smiling handshake with the Chinese President.

“China took the lives of our 20 brave soldiers in the Galwan Valley.During Operation Sindoor, China was openly supporting Pakistan. China provided live updates to Pakistan… In response to these nefarious actions by China, Narendra Modi took strict measures. He shook hands with the Chinese President with a smile,” the Congress party said on X.

The remarks from the Congress party came shortly after Modi and Xi held a bilateral meeting ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in the port city of Tianjin.

During the meeting, Modi highlighted the positive direction India-China ties received after their interaction in Kazan, last year.

The Prime Minister noted that the interests of 2.8 billion people of India and China are linked to the bilateral cooperation of the two countries.

“This will also pave the way for the welfare of the entire humanity,” Modi told Jinping during their meeting.

The PM stressed that New Delhi is committed to take this relationship forward based on mutual trust, respect and sensitivity.

“We are determined to take our relationship forward based on mutual trust, respect and sensitivity. We extend our best wishes for the successful hosting of the SCO Summit, and I thank you for the invitation for this visit and this meeting,” the PM said.

Reacting to the meeting, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said that India needs to remain alert given the recent history of China.

“China has always betrayed us. China is not very reliable. They cannot be fully trusted. Our best wishes are with Modi ji…With the recent history, he needs to be alert,” he said.

Raising concerns over the border dispute and the Chinese construction along the Arunachal Pradesh border, the Congress leader further added, “Modi ji should not take any steps hastily. He should speak for the interests of India.”
