Taking a serious view of what it called “violations of organisational discipline”, the Haryana unit of the Congress party on Thursday suspended five of its MLAs from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect.
The MLAs who have been suspended are from Narayangarh, Sadhaura, Pihowa and Kalka Assembly constituencies — namely Shaili Chaudhary, Renu Bala, Sardar Gursewak Singh, Mohammad Ilyas and Mohammad Israil.
Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee President Rao Narender Singh said that the action has been taken on the recommendation of the State Disciplinary Committee and after approval from All India Congress Committee President Mallikarjun Kharge.
According to a Congress press release, Singh said that suspended MLAs had recently voted against the party’s authorised candidate during the Rajya Sabha elections, displaying serious indiscipline, which is against organisational norms.
The Haryana Congress president further stressed that that “discipline is paramount in the party and indiscipline at any level will not be tolerated.”
Reacting to the suspension of the MLAs, Congress MP Kumari Selja urged the leadership to deliberate on why the party fell short of nine votes in the Rajya Sabha elections.
“The party has its own procedures. Action has indeed been taken, but the party must also deliberate on why we fell short by 9 votes (in the Rajya Sabha elections),” Selja was quoted as saying by ANI.
Senior Congress leader and former state Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the decision was taken after considering all aspects.
