The opposition Congress in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh staged a demonstration and burned effigies of Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar and former Home Minister Narottam Mishra in protest against the termination of Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti’s membership from the Assembly.

Datia District Congress President Ashok Dangi led the demonstration held at Bam Mahadev Square in Datia city. Dangi alleged that Bharti’s Assembly membership was terminated in a high-handed manner. “It is a political conspiracy,” he charged.

He said the ruling BJP always tries to suppress the voice of the opposition. A large number of Congress workers gathered at the demonstration and raised slogans.

A special MP/MLA court in New Delhi, on April 2, sentenced Rajendra Bharti to three years’ imprisonment in a 27-year-old bank fraud case.

Following the court’s decision, the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Secretariat, on the directives of Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar, issued an order late at night terminating Bharti’s Assembly membership. The order also declared the Datia Assembly seat vacant.

The Congress has been crying foul since then, protesting the manner in which the order was passed hurriedly at night, despite the Delhi court granting Bharti 60 days to appeal against its decision in a higher court.

In the 2023 State Assembly elections, Rajendra Bharti had defeated BJP senior leader and former Madhya Pradesh Home and Legislative Affairs Minister Narottam Mishra.
