He said the Congress government in the state was honouring that legacy through its focus on social justice, equal opportunity, and the dignity of every citizen.

“The Congress government today carries forward that legacy through social justice, equal opportunity, and the dignity of every person in Telangana,” he added.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also greeted the people of Telangana, describing the state’s formation as a landmark chapter in India’s democratic history and crediting the Congress-led UPA government for fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the region.

“On the historic occasion of Telangana Formation Day, we extend our heartfelt greetings to the people of Telangana — a state born out of sacrifice, resilience, and the unwavering aspirations of millions,” Kharge said.

Recalling the events that culminated in the formation of the state in 2014, Kharge said the Congress-led UPA government, under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, played a decisive role in fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Telangana.

“The creation of Telangana stands as a defining moment in India’s democratic journey. Under the leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, the Congress-led UPA government honoured the long-standing aspirations of the people and played a historic role in the formation of India’s youngest state,” he said.

Kharge paid homage to the martyrs and the thousands of students, youth, employees, farmers, and activists whose participation and sacrifices sustained the statehood movement over several decades.

“On this solemn day, we bow our heads in tribute to the countless martyrs, students, youth, employees, farmers, and activists whose sacrifices and struggles made Telangana a reality. Their courage and commitment will forever remain etched in the soul of the state,” he said.

Highlighting the work of the Congress government in Telangana, Kharge said it was pursuing the vision of a “Prajala Telangana” — a people’s Telangana — built on the foundations of social justice, dignity, inclusive development, and equal opportunity. He said welfare measures and governance reforms were aimed at empowering every section of society and ensuring that the benefits of growth reached all citizens.

He also invoked the idea of “Indiramma Rajyam”, saying it continued to guide the state’s development agenda through a focus on justice for marginalised communities, empowerment of women and youth, support for weaker sections, and balanced development across rural and urban areas.

“As Telangana moves forward with confidence and hope, we convey our warmest wishes to its people for peace, prosperity, and continued progress,” Kharge added.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also joined the celebrations, describing Telangana as a land of courage, innovation, and progress.

“Warm wishes to the people of Telangana on Formation Day. A land of courage, innovation, and progress, Telangana continues to inspire. May the state continue to prosper and create opportunities for all,” she said in her message on X.

Telangana, officially formed on June 2, 2014, after being carved out of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, is observing its 12th Formation Day this year. The statehood movement, which spanned several decades and witnessed widespread public participation, culminated in the passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act by Parliament, leading to the birth of India’s 29th state.

Formation Day is being marked across Telangana with official ceremonies, cultural programmes, and tributes to the leaders, activists, and ordinary citizens who contributed to the movement.

The messages from the Congress leadership echoed a broader sentiment of remembrance and celebration as political parties across the spectrum reflected on Telangana’s journey, achievements, and the aspirations that continue to shape its future.
