Congress Thursday expressed deep concern over the recent strategic mutual defence pact between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, signed on September 17.
“Now, Saudi Arabia, where the Prime Minister was when the Pahalgam terror attacks took place, has signed a ‘strategic mutual defence,’ pact with Pakistan. This, of course, has grave implications for India’s national security. The Indian National Congress notes with concern yet another setback for the much-hyped personalised diplomacy of our Prime Minister,” according to a statement by Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh.

Asserting that the pact strengthens Pakistan’s regional position and complicates India’s national security landscape, Ramesh said it raises questions about India’s diplomatic stance and security in the region.
He said that Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir’s meeting with President Donald Trump and US General Michael Kurilla’s positive remarks on Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts were diplomatic setbacks for India.
Asserting that the pact was yet another setback for Prime Minister Modi’s personalised diplomacy, the Congress stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the government’s diplomatic engagements.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that India will study the implications of the pact for national security, regional stability, and global stability. In a statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasised the government’s commitment to protecting India’s national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security.
