The Congress party officially announced here on Friday that it expelled two of its Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) candidates who withdrew their candidatures, allowing ruling Mahayuti candidates to win unopposed.
Congress candidate Sahebrao Kamble, who was supposed to contest from the Yavatmal constituency, and Shailesh Agarwal, who was fielded by the Congress from the Chandrapur constituency, withdrew their candidatures without notifying the Congress Maharashtra state leadership, resulting in their expulsion from the party.

The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) faced a major setback when its candidates withdrew their candidatures on Thursday, ensuring that the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance wins as many as 5 seats unopposed in the Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) election.
On Thursday, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena expelled its candidate Bal Mane from the party for anti-party activities after he withdrew his candidature at the last minute.
The Uddhav party also expelled Devyani Dongaonkar and her husband Krishna Dongaonkar after she withdrew her candidacy for the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Jalna Legislative Council constituency. The party also expelled its candidate Anil Kadam who was supposed to contest from the Nashik Legislative Council constituency after he withdrew by not filing his application.
So far, BJP-led Mahayuti candidates have won 5 of the 17 Legislative Council seats unopposed. Out of these, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena won two seats, Sunetra Ajit Pawar-led NCP won two seats and the BJP won one seat.
In Raigad-Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg constituency, the ruling Mahayuti’s Aniket Tatkare was elected unopposed, after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena now expelled candidate Bal Mane he withdrew his application.
In Pune, Sunetra Ajit Pawar-led NCP’s Vikram Kakade won unopposed after the MVA’s Shrikant Patil and BJP rebel Pradeep Kand withdrew, while in Thane, Ravindra Phatak of Eknath Shinde’s Sena won unopposed after Abhijit Pawar of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP withdrew.
In Yavatmal, the ruling Mahayuti’s Dushyant Chaturvedi won unopposed in after the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) candidates withdrew, while in the Wardha-Chandrapur- Gadchiroli constituency, BJP candidate Arun Lakhani won unopposed after the Congress and independent candidates withdrew.
The contest is now restricted to the remaining 12 out of 17 Legislative Council seats where ruling Mahayuti and opposition MVA candidates will contest. Voting will take place on June 18 while counting of votes will take place on June 22.
In Solapur, the contest will be between the BJP’s Rajendra Raut (BJP) and Sharad Pawar-led NCP’s Vasantrao Deshmukh, while in Ahilyanagar, the contest will be between the BJP’s Prajakta Tanpure and an independent candidate Dattatreya Pansare.
In Jalgaon, the contest will be between the BJP’s Nandkishore Mahajan and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena’s Sharad Tayde versus a rebel from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena called Reshma Kale.
In the Sangli-Satara constituency, the contest is between the BJP’s Dhairyasheel Kadam and the Sharad PAwar-led NCP’s Abhaysinh Jagtap versus an independent candidate called Kishor Dhumal.
In Nanded constituency, the contest is between the BJP’s Amar Rajurkar and the Congress party candidate Ramdas Patil, while in the Bhandara-Gondia constituency, the contest is between a Congress supporter Naresh Ishwarkar versus BJP’s Avinash Brahmankar.
In Nashik, the contest is between an independent candidate Gokul Geete and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena candidate Narendra Darade, while in Amravati, the contest is between Congress candidate Harshdeep Deshmukh and BJP’s Praveen Pote.
In Dharashiv-Latur-Beed constituency, the contest is between the BJP’s Basavaraj Patil and the Congress candidate Mahesh Deshmukh.
In Parbhani-Hingoli constituency, the contest is between Shinde-led Sena’s Saeed Khan and Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena’s Dr Vivek Navander versus an independent candidate Sushil Deshmukh.
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Jalna constituency, the contest is between the BJP’s Suhas Shirsat and Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena’s Ganesh Lokhande, while in Nagpur (by-election), the contest is between the BJP’s Rajiv Potdar and Congress candidate Atul Londhe.
