The Chief Minister said Teejan Bai’s death marked the loss of one of the finest representatives of Chhattisgarh’s rich folk tradition. Sai recalled that her performances stood apart for their unique blend of music, storytelling and dramatic expression. Her powerful narration, vivid portrayal of characters and commanding stage presence left a lasting impression on audiences across India as well as in Asia, Europe and several other parts of the world. According to him, she transformed Pandavani from a regional folk tradition into an internationally recognised performing art.

Reflecting on her remarkable journey, the Chief Minister said Teejan Bai’s life was defined by determination, perseverance and courage. He noted that she entered the field at a time when women rarely performed Pandavani. Overcoming social barriers through talent and relentless dedication, she established herself as one of India’s most respected folk artistes and became a lasting source of inspiration for generations of performers. Sai said her contribution to Indian folk culture earned her widespread recognition at both the national and international levels.

He pointed out that she was honoured with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award before being conferred the Padma Vibhushan in 2019, India’s second-highest civilian honour. He also noted that she remains the only personality from Chhattisgarh to have received the prestigious distinction.

The Chief Minister said tributes had poured in from across the country following her demise. He mentioned that President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Union Ministers had acknowledged her unparalleled contribution to Indian art and culture. Sai also recalled that during his visit to Raipur for the state’s Foundation Day celebrations, Prime Minister Modi had spoken over the telephone with Teejan Bai’s family members to enquire about their well-being.

Sai further said that several universities had conferred honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degrees on the veteran artiste in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to Indian folk traditions. He remarked that her lifelong efforts to preserve and promote folk music and culture would always be remembered. Her artistic brilliance, unwavering commitment and devotion to Pandavani, he said, would continue to inspire future generations to cherish and carry forward India’s rich cultural heritage.

The Chief Minister offered his respects to the departed artiste on behalf of the Assembly. He prayed for eternal peace for her soul and expressed condolences to her family, admirers and the entire artistic fraternity, saying her contribution to Chhattisgarh and the nation would remain immortal.
