The President’s Rule was first imposed in the state on February 13, 2025, following prolonged ethnic violence and a breakdown of administrative machinery in the state.
The move comes even as the situation remains tense in several parts of the state.
Meanwhile, efforts have been made by the Central government to bring the warring communities to the negotiating table.
Today’s move is aimed at further stabilising the law-and-order situation and assessing the feasibility of holding Assembly elections at a later stage.
Manipur was placed under President’s Rule after the BJP failed to reach a consensus on a successor to N Biren Singh after his resignation as Chief Minister on February 9, following nearly two years of ethnic violence in the state.
Singh stepped down just a day before his government was due to face a no-confidence motion and a critical floor test in the state assembly.
The ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei people that erupted in the state on May 3, 2023, has claimed the lives of 250 people and displaced more than 60,000 people from their homes.
