CBI gets Sandeshkhali accused Sheikh Shahjahan’s custody after HC order

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday got the custody of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan, who is the prime accused in the case pertaining to the alleged attack on Enforcement Directorate officials in January this year.

Earlier on Tuesday, the West Bengal CID refused to hand over the custody of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the state government moved the Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court’s order.

A CBI team that reached the West Bengal police headquarters in Kolkata left empty-handed after the CID refused to allow the central probe agency to take over the probe into Sandeshkhali attack on the officials of Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in January this year.

However, the West Bengal government’s plea could not be listed for urgent hearing in Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court issued fresh directions to handover the case and the custody of the accused to CBI by 4:15 PM.

Shahjahan was arrested by the West Bengal police last week from North 24 Parganas district in connection with the alleged assault on the ED officials during a raid in connection with the ration scam.

Earlier today, the West Bengal government sought an urgent hearing of its plea in Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court order directing CBI to take over the probe.

Appearing for the West Bengal government, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “Urgency is that they wanted overnight compliance in an interim order.”

A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked Singhvi to move the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, saying the latter will order listing the plea.
