Ganesh and Shyam Kamankar have been arrested by the Central probe agency for allegedly operating the illegal call centers, Swagan Business Solutions Pvt. Ltd., officials said.
A CBI spokesperson said in a statement, “A case has been registered against four private individuals, unidentified public servants, and others for allegedly cheating UK nationals by impersonating insurance agents and government officials.”
Documents seized during searches revealed that the call centers employed 60 people and used voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, spoofed phone numbers, and forged documents to deceive individuals into revealing their credit and debit card information, the officer said.
The victims were allegedly pressured into paying for nonexistent insurance policies, officials said. The proceeds from the fraud were reportedly routed through PayPal and conventional banking channels.
“CBI carried out searches at multiple locations in Nashik and Kalyan (Thane), resulting in the seizure of incriminating digital evidence,” the spokesperson said, adding, “This included victim data, fake insurance policy scripts, eight mobile phones, and eight computer systems and servers, as well as unexplained cash amounting to Rs 5 lakh.”
The accused have been remanded to CBI custody until Monday.
