The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, on Wednesday, approved the construction of the 4-lane greenfield access-controlled Mokama-Munger section of the Buxar-Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor in Bihar, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The project, he said, will be built on a Hybrid Annuity Mode and spans 82.400 km with a total capital cost of Rs 4447.38 crore.

The section will pass through or provide connectivity to key regional cities like Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, Munger, and Bhagalpur.

Vaishnaw said that the Munger-Jamalpur-Bhagalpur belt is emerging as a significant industrial hub, focusing on defense, locomotives, food processing, and logistics. Bhagalpur is a prominent textile and logistics hub, while Barahiya is developing as a center for food packaging and agro-warehousing. The project is expected to generate around 14.83 lakh man-days of direct employment and 18.46 lakh man-days of indirect employment.

The 4-lane access-controlled corridor will support average vehicular speeds of 80 km/h, reducing travel time to approximately 1.5 hours.

The Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway project aims to enhance connectivity and economic growth in Bihar, linking western districts like Buxar to key commercial hubs such as Bhagalpur, Patna, and Munger. The project will upgrade existing highways (NH-922, NH-31, and NH-33) to expressway specifications, with a total length of approximately 360 km.

The construction of this section is part of the larger initiative to boost infrastructure development in Bihar, which is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and residents’ quality of life.
