Burn victim airlifted from Bhubaneswar to AIIMS-Delhi for advanced medical treatment: miscreants at large

The 15-year-old girl from Odisha’s Puri district, who sustained around 75 per cent burn injuries after being set ablaze by unidentified miscreants, was airlifted to AIIMS, New Delhi, from Bhubaneswar on Sunday to provide advanced medical treatment to the victim, still battling for life.

The minor girl, with 75 per cent burns, was stable and was on the oxygen support system at the Intensive Care Unit of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar. As it was found that it was a fit case for airlifting, the victim was evacuated in a special flight, said AIIMS-Bhubaneswar officials here.

The team of experts monitoring the health of the victim was of the view that medical facilities available at AIIMS-Delhi were much better than those available in Bhubaneswar. That’s why experts suggested the airlifting of the victim, they said.

Doctors and two family members accompanied the victim on the special flight. A green corridor was created from AIIMS-Bhubaneswar to Biju Patnaik International Airport here for the unhindered movement of the ambulance carrying the victim.

At a time when the BJP Government is facing backlash over a spurt in crime against women, the minor girl was allegedly set ablaze in broad daylight on Saturday by three motorcycle-borne miscreants at a village in Odisha’s Puri district, sparking fresh outrage across the State.

The crime occurred at a deserted roadside spot on the Haripur-Balanga road near Bayabar village under Balanga police station jurisdiction as the miscreants stuffed a handkerchief on the victim’s mouth and dragged her to the crime spot. Later, they poured inflammable substances and set her afire. Sporting masks, they swiftly fled from the spot as the victim in flames ran for life.

A day after the horrific incident, police are still groping in the dark with the identity of the miscreants yet to be established. The CCTV video footage gathered from various spots has failed to throw much light on the miscreants, confided a senior police official.

The crime was perpetrated at a remote place, and a CCTV installation could not be found within a five-km radius of the crime spot. The miscreants might have fled from the spot as there were many escape routes, uncovered by CCTV, added the official.

Meanwhile, local police are questioning at least eight people, including a few relatives of the victim girl, in an attempt to identify the miscreants and ascertain the motive of the crime. However, nothing tangible or definite clue has emerged to crack the sensational crime, the official added.
