BRO starts snow clearance to reopen strategic Leh-Manali highway
Men of the Border Roads Organization (BRO) have initiated the challenging job of removing the heavy accumulation of snow to reopen the strategic Leh-Manali highway.
The Border Road Organisation (BRO) has completed the work on Nelong to Sonam motorable road in district Uttarkashi. This strategic road project will help improve connectivity in the border area.
The news will cheer the tourists as now they can explore vistas of Leh-Ladakh and Lahaul Spiti in Uttarakhand by undertaking a comfortable motorable journey. Till recently they had to undertake a bumpy ride to reach the Nelong valley.
BRO’s Lieutenant General Harish Thukral, GOC of Uttar Bharat Area, dedicated a 45-meter long bridge on Jadganga River, the confluence of Nila Pani and Jad Ganga rivers, and 19.3 Km long roads in border area with China from Nelong to Sonam via Naga on Thursdays.

Constructed by Project Shivalik of Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the completion of the project will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of troops deployed along the Indo-China border besides defence preparedness.
Chief engineer AS Rathore disclosed that the bridge has been constructed using the technique of Pre-Stressed Concrete and roads with cold mix technology.
The construction of the bridge and the roads with National Highway Double Lane (NHDL) specifications at an altitudes ranging from 12,000 to 13,000 feet was a challenging task. Located in remote and high altitude area, the project will enhance the operational capability of Armed forces in border area.
Before the Indo-China war, the Nelong valley was an important stopover for the cross-border traders.
Still, many structures related to the trade prevail there – including a wooden bridge known as ‘Gartang Gali’ and the Lal Devta temple, where the Bhotiya people engaged in cross-border trade used to make offering before proceeding for Tibet.
Nelong is located en-route to Gangotri and a trip to this valley will take the tourists to the high-altitude desert of Uttarakhand.
