Faced with a string of desertions, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Saturday, dissolved, with immediate effect, all provincial committees of the party in Jammu.

A party spokesman said that the party chief, Mehbooba Mufti, has dissolved all provincial, district, and zonal committees of the Jammu division.

As such the posts of all office bearers at provincial, district and zonal level in the party stand dissolved, the spokesman said.

Mehbooba has been facing a virtual rebellion in her party since she was dislodged from power by the BJP which withdrew support from the coalition on June 19, 2018.

PDP’s senior leaders, who were once considered trusted lieutenants of Mehbooba’s father, late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, have left the party as they said they were feeling “marginalised” in the party.

On December 19, last year, her one time confidant, Basharat Bukhari, who was a minister in her cabinet, resigned from the PDP and joined the National Conference (NC). Basharat Bukhari is the brother of Kashmiri journalist, Shujat Bukhari, who was shot dead by terrorists in Srinagar.

Haseeb Drabu, another senior leader and finance minister in the erstwhile Mehbooba cabinet, also resigned from the PDP.

Imran Raza Ansari, who was also a minister in the Mehbooba led BJP-PDP government, was the first to raise the banner of revolt against her and joined Sajjad Lone’s Peoples Conference (PC) as soon as her government fell.

Javed Mustafa Mir, another senior leader and party’s face in central Kashmir, resigned from the primary membership of the party in the first week of January. Mir was a Cabinet minister in the PDP-BJP government.

Among other prominent leaders who have deserted the PDP are Peer Mohammad Hussain, who was among the founders of the PDP, Abid Ansari, Abbas Wani, and Saifuddin Bhat.
