A Bangladeshi woman and her husband were taken into custody in Mandi Dhanaura after police discovered they had been living in the area illegally, officials confirmed on Friday.

The couple was detained following a tip-off, prompting both police and intelligence officials to launch an inquiry on Thursday.

During the operation, officials recovered a marriage certificate, which revealed that Reena Begum and Rashid Ali had married in Saudi Arabia a few years ago. According to their statements, Reena entered India with Rashid via Nepal in October 2025.

Police have filed an FIR against Reena under the Foreigners Act, while Rashid has been booked for harbouring an illegal immigrant.

Authorities said they received information earlier in the day that Rashid Ali—who works in Saudi Arabia and resides near the Sunhari Mosque in Mohalla Katra—had brought a Bangladeshi woman home about two months earlier. Acting on the tip, police brought the couple to the station for questioning and informed senior officials as well as the Intelligence Bureau.

Investigators reported that Reena initially attempted to mislead them by claiming she was from West Bengal. However, her real identity was soon confirmed: she is from Ghazipur in the Dhaka district, Bangladesh.

The arrests come amid Operation Torch, an ongoing state government initiative targeting illegal immigration. Police in Uttar Pradesh continue to intensify action in multiple districts under the campaign.
