The Election Commission of India (ECI) Monday announced the schedule for bye-elections to eight assembly seats across seven states, with voting set to take place on November 11 and counting of votes on November 14.

These bye-elections coincide with the Bihar Assembly elections, which will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, with results to be declared on November 14.

Jammu and Kashmir: Budgam and Nagrota. In Budgam, the vacancy existed after the resignation of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who chose to retain his seat in the Ganderbal constituency. In Nagrota, vacancy existed after the death of BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana in October last year

Rajasthan: Anta. Fell vacant after BJP MLA Kanwarlal Meena’s disqualification following his conviction in a 2005 criminal case

 

Jharkhand: Ghatshila. Fell vacant after the death of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader and Cabinet Minister Ramdas Soren

Telangana: Jubilee Hills. Vacancy existed after the death of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA Maganti Gopinath

Punjab: Tarn Taran fell vacant after the death of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal

Mizoram: Dampa has been vacant after the death of Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator Lalrintluanga Saila

Odisha: Nuapada. Vacancy existed after the death of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Rajendra Dholakia

Issue of gazette notification: October 13 (for some states), October 10-13 (varies by state)

Last date for filing of nominations: October 17-21 (varies by state)

Scrutiny of nominations: October 18-23 (varies by state)

Withdrawal of candidature: October 20-27 (varies by state)

Voting: November 11

Counting of Votes: November 14

The Election Commission has emphasized transparency and fairness in the electoral process, with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) to be used in all polling stations.
