Assam police have suo motu registered a case against the organisers of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Nyay Yatra, accusing them of violating the approved route and inciting disturbances in Jorhat town.

The incident unfolded on the evening of January 18 when the yatra reportedly deviated from the authorised path, resulting in chaos and clashes with law enforcement personnel.

According to the police, the yatra organisers, led by K B Byju, took an unauthorised route through Jorhat town without the necessary permissions.

The sudden change in the procession’s direction led to disruptions, with allegations that the organisers encouraged the crowd to breach traffic barricades and assault on-duty police personnel.

Started from Sivasagar on January 18, the eight-day yatra will traverse nearly 17 districts of Assam, covering a distance of 833 km.

The inaugural day featured roadshows in Amguri and Mariani, both located in the Sivasagar district, with the entourage resting for the night in Jorhat.

On January 20, the yatra will progress to Lakhimpur. The yatra is expected to reach Guwahati on January 23.
