In a major breakthrough, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force busted an Army job racket by arresting three members of a gang that was allegedly involved in making fake documents for recruitment in the force. The team recovered some fake marksheets, IDs, a laptop, mobile phones, cash and other material from the possession of the arrested gang members.

A case has been registered against the three — Ashish Kumar, Victor Raghav and Veer Bahadur Singh. They were produced in a local court on Monday.

The STF had been tipped off by top sources of the police department in Lucknow about the activities of the gang. The accused would cheat youngsters by taking money from them on the false promise recruitment in the Army with the help of fake documents.

A team of STF led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Singh was formed to probe the Army job racket. The team started investigation and got vital inputs about the gang. The STF sleuths identified two members of the gang, Ashish and Victor, from Kankerkhera area on Sunday. Identification of the duo led the police to their aides Veer Bahadur Singh, an ex-serviceman, and Kapil Kumar. While Veer Bahadur was nabbed, Kapil Kumar managed to escape, said the police.

During interrogation, the arrested trio told the STF that they used to take Rs 2 to 3 lakh from each applicant on the promise of giving them jobs ion the Indian Army. Veer Bahadur and Kapil used to get in touch with the applicants, negotiate with them and arrange medical certificates for them. Being a retired Armyman, Veer Bahadur had contacts in the Army, which he utilised to carry out the activities, said the police.
