Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Assam for a two-day visit packed with political and developmental engagements, marking the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) early preparations for the 2026 assembly elections.

Shah was received at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who later accompanied him to the state BJP headquarters for a core committee meeting.

Shah was originally scheduled for a shorter trip on August 29 but extended his stay to address both party strategy and key government programmes.

Taking to social media before his arrival, Shah wrote, “Leaving for Assam on a two-day tour. Today, will chair the BJP’s core committee meeting in Guwahati. In the morning tomorrow will initiate the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory to bolster cyber security in the region along with various other projects.”

On Friday, Shah will inaugurate the newly constructed Brahmaputra Wing of the Raj Bhavan and virtually launch the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory, a project aimed at strengthening the fight against digital crimes in the Northeast.

He will also lay the foundation stones of infrastructure projects for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and the Assam Rifles.

A major highlight of the visit will be his address at the NDA Panchayat Pratinidhi Sammelan at the Khanapara Veterinary Field. The convention of newly elected panchayat representatives is being seen as a formal launchpad for the BJP’s grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2026 state polls.

In the evening, Shah is scheduled to inaugurate the birth centenary celebrations of Golap Borbora, Assam’s first non-Congress chief minister, marking the party’s effort to highlight non-Congress legacies in the state’s political history. He will also review the progress of the Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Complex, a 5,000-seat capacity auditorium in Guwahati.

The timing of Shah’s visit is crucial. Assam is the BJP’s stronghold in the Northeast, and under Himanta Biswa Sarma, the party has consolidated its base since coming to power in 2016. With elections less than two years away, the BJP is keen to energise its organisational machinery at the grassroots.

Chief Minister Sarma, responding to Shah’s post, said, “Your guidance has helped Assam chart new territories in peace and development, and we are confident that this visit will further strengthen our resolve to serve the people.”

Shah will return to New Delhi late Friday evening after completing his engagements.
