In a significant legal development, the Allahabad High Court has stayed the Single Bench’s order that had postponed the Uttar Pradesh Engineering Services (UPES) Main Examination, scheduled by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC).

On Friday, a Division Bench, comprising Justices MC Tripathi and Anees Gupta, issued the ruling after UPPSC filed a special appeal against the Single Bench’s decision. The court allowed the main examination to proceed as per the original schedule but imposed a temporary hold on the declaration of the results.

Earlier, the Single Bench, headed by Justice Ajit Kumar, had instructed UPPSC to release a revised preliminary exam result before conducting the mains. This directive followed petitions from Rajat Maurya and 41 other candidates, who argued that only 7,358 candidates had been declared eligible for the main exam, far below the 9,135 candidates expected based on the advertised 1:15 vacancy-to-candidate ratio.

Further complicating matters, the petitioners contended that the merit list overlooked reservation principles, particularly failing to account for high-merit reserved category candidates within the unreserved list. As a result, the Single Bench had called for a revision of the merit list of the preliminary examination in accordance with the principles of reservation and to ensure that the candidates with high merit of the reserved category get a place in the unreserved list. Only after that the main examination should be allowed to be conducted.

With the Division Bench’s stay, the UPES Main Examination will continue as planned, though the release of the exam results has been temporarily halted.
