The last rites of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Ajit Pawar were performed on Thursday in Baramati, his political stronghold, following his death in a plane crash on Wednesday morning.
The funeral was conducted with full state honours amid heightened security. Senior national and state leaders were present, while multiple agencies continue to investigate the crash.

Parth Pawar and Jay Pawar, sons of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, lit the funeral pyre and performed the last rites of their father in Baramati on Thursday.
The last rites were conducted with full state honours at the Vidya Pratishthan ground.
Several senior national and state leaders paid their last respects to Ajit Pawar at the Vidya Pratishthan ground in Baramati on Thursday.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant were among those who laid wreaths and paid homage.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin also laid a wreath and paid last respects to the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister.
Actor Riteish Deshmukh was also present at the funeral ceremony and paid his last respects in Baramati.

Ajit Pawar’s sons, Parth and Jay, are now performing the last rites rituals of their father in Baramati. Also present for the cremation are Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President Nitin Nabin, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, family members, other political leaders, and NCP workers.

The mortal remains of Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, wrapped in Tricolour, have been brought to the Vidya Pratishthan ground for the last rites. The National Flag, draped over the mortal remains of the NCP leader for the State funeral, have now been handed over to his son Jay Pawar.

Hearse leaves Katewadi residence
The hearse van carrying the mortal remains of Ajit Pawar left his residence in Katewadi, Baramati, on Thursday morning, officials said. The mortal remains are being taken for the funeral ceremony at the Vidya Pratishthan ground.

Full state honours have been accorded to Ajit Pawar during the funeral proceedings. His wife Sunetra Pawar and sons Parth Pawar and Jay Pawar are present.
Antim Yatra scheduled this morning
Ajit Pawar’s Antim Yatra is scheduled to begin at 9 am from the Vidya Pratishthan campus (Gadima). The procession will pass through Baramati to allow people to pay their respects before culminating at the Vidya Pratishthan Ground, where the last rites will be performed at 11 am.
Chariot prepared for procession
The chariot carrying Pawar’s mortal remains has been decorated with flowers and bears his photograph along with a board reading “Swargiya Ajitdada Pawar amar rahein”, officials said.

Supporters of the NCP chief gathered outside the Ahilyabai Holkar Government Medical College in Baramati as his mortal remains were taken out earlier in the day, according to officials.

Three-day state mourning announced
The Maharashtra government has announced a three-day state mourning period. During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings across the state.
Postmortems completed for crash victims
Postmortem examinations of pilot Captain Sumit Kapur, co-pilot Captain Shambhavi Pathak and flight attendant Pinky Mali have been completed at the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Government Medical College in Baramati. The bodies have been handed over to their respective families.
AAIB takes over probe
Police have registered an accidental death report in connection with the plane crash. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has taken over the investigation into the Learjet 45 aircraft, registration VT-SSK, operated by VSR Ventures.
Crash details
The chartered aircraft was flying from Mumbai to Baramati when it crashed during landing near Baramati airport on Wednesday morning. Apart from Ajit Pawar, those on board included a personal security officer, a flight attendant and two crew members — the pilot-in-command and second-in-command.
The anti-merger Sunil Tatkare-Praful Patel faction within the Sunetra Ajit Pawar-led NCP is likely to join the BJP even as the Deputy CM is preparing to call a core committee meeting to discuss differences within the party, sources said here on Monday.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar has written a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding that corporators of the Ajit Pawar-founded NCP must get an equal amount of development funds for their wards, as much as BJP corporators receive.
