An Air India plane AI2744, operating from Kochi in Kerala to Mumbai in Maharashtra, faced a runway excursion during landing due to heavy rains on Monday.
“Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked. The aircraft has been grounded for checks,” an Air India spokesperson said.

Following the incident, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai issued a separate statment confirming the safety of all passengers and crew members.
The primary runway sustained minor damage in the accident following which the airport authorities activated the secondary runway to ensure continuity of flight operations.
“All passengers and crew are safe. There are minor damages reported to the airport’s primary runway, 09/27. In order to ensure continuity of operations, the Secondary Runway 14/32- has been activated,” CSMIA statement read.
The incident comes more than a month after an Air India plane AI171 crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, leaving 260 people, including passengers, and crew members, dead.
